KNOW YUH ARTIST!

Featuring DABA DAVISUAL

S

Hello! Welcome to my blog series called KNOW YUH ARTIST! Where I shine a light on some of the talented friends I have in Barbados. For my first entry, I’m taking a look at Daba Davisual, a very talented singer, Actor and fellow Memeologist 😆!

1. What first got you into music?

My mother always told me; son, no matter what is happening when it is your turn to shine...SHINE! baby with the world. always encouraged me to follow my ambitions & this was also fueled by my father's huge & versatile music collection. Through his collection, I was exposed to Queen, Elton John & Earth Wind & Fire & even more Prince. My mother blasted the Carpenters every morning before I went to school, much to my delight. My mother explained to me in detail the meaning & stories behind many Soca tunes, this also gave me an early edge.

2. Who inspired you to make music?

Whatever song is my latest is my favourite song to perform. Always enthusiastic to share my new babies with the world. always encouraged me to follow my ambitions & this was also fueled by my father's huge & versatile music collection. Through his collection, I was exposed to Queen, Elton John & Earth Wind & Fire & even more Prince. My mother blasted the Carpenters every morning before I went to school, much to my delight. 3. How would you describe the music that you typically create?

My music is a blend of life experiences, social commentary & fantasy. It is meant to be an escape & auditory adventure for my listeners. I do mostly up-tempo numbers, but I can be very versatile. I love building interesting harmonies when the opportunity presents itself & always aim to create witty lyrics.

4. What is your creative process like?

Creating is very easy for me. I literally feel like I am going crazy from constantly getting ideas during my everyday life and scrabbling to make a note of all of them. I usually start with the lyrics & can then build music or a visual around them later. The dances on stage I come up with on the spot.

5. Who would you most like to collaborate with?

I think Davisual, Skinny, Bunji & Bounty would be a wicked match up. I would love to go verse for verse with Eminem just to see how well I would hold my own track wise lol! Would have loved to work with Michael & Prince.

6. If you could go open a show for any artist who would it be?

No artist in particular. Would like to open any major Soca or dancehall show. I think my opening would be more than complimentary!

7. What is one message you would give to your fans?

I love you dearly! You make the hard work & long nights worth it all. We are family & I enjoy taking this journey & seeing the potential of this movement together!

8. What would you be doing right now, if it wasn’t for your music career?

I would do acting & voiceovers (ads/cartoons). I am also very good at memes & motivation quotes. Music comes first but as long as I can entertain & inspire people, I am quite happy!

9. Where have you performed?

Other than the 2 nights I performed on a European Cruise ship during talent segments & parting dance floors in nightclubs worldwide. I have never performed outside of Barbados. My music, however, does my travelling for me. I was told I was causing quite a stir in London and have voiced for producers from France, Italy & St. Lucia. I have also collaborated with 3 well known Jamaican acts: Deva Bratt, Dotta Coppa & Mad Dog.

10. What is your favourite song to perform?

Whatever song is my latest is my favorite song to perform. Always enthusiastic to share my new babies with the world.

11. Which famous musicians do you admire?

I admire all musicians because mastering any instrument takes great discipline.

12. What is the best advice you’ve been given?

My mother always told me; son, no matter what is happening when it is your turn to shine...SHINE!

13. If you could change anything about the industry, what would it be?

I would get even more airplay & play full stop locally lol!

14. What’s next for you?

Next would be to make my Daba brand bigger, stronger & more known globally. I think I already have those wheels set in motion. I would love to star in a local film because I people are yet to see my full potential as an actor. Marrying Destra would not hurt either😀.
